Way back when the first wave of Cities of Sigmar came out, I ordered a box of Freeguild Cavaliers online, and what got delivered was Pontifex Zenestra. I had no desire to put Pope Hypocrite I in my army, so I came up with something that would allow me to use her rules while fitting far better with the weird faith of the city of Pharosgard. Behold, the Reliquary of the First Lorekeeper.
Hussar and Rifleman, Napoleonic Wars Perry Miniatures November 2025/January 2026 Every so often I get the urge to really lean into the whole ‘glutton for punishment’ thing I’ve got going on and paint up some Napoleonics. All that piping, lace and finery can be a bit of a test of one’s patience, but I think the results often speak for themselves. If I ever need a reminder of why painting miniatures for this period can be so rewarding, I turn to Perry Miniatures, and their 40mm range in this case. Here we have two elite infantrymen - a French trooper of the 2nd Hussars, and a British Rifleman of an undisclosed regiment - ready to march (or skirmish?) into battle. I’m not entirely sure how two men from opposing nations would feel about being photographed together, but it’s 2026 and we’re all friends now.
Helsmiths of Hashut Infernal Cohort 09-Jan-2026 January of this year was ‘FinishIt-uary’. My desk was teeming with unfinished work, so I decided to put January aside to just finish some stuff. I didnt clear the desk off, but I put a dent in it - Starting with this! I got this Infernal Cohort as a free mini of the month from my local Warhammer store. The new Chaorfs very appealing, so I wanted to pick up one and try fiddling with a scheme that’s a bit more reminiscent of the classic scheme. Bit more vibrant red, touch more gold and orange flames where necessary. I really enjoyed this! I’d love to grab some more at some point!
Prussians, Napoleonic Wars Eureka September 2025 I suppose, realistically, it was only a matter of time before I began my exploration into yet another scale. Here we have some Prussian jagers, grenadiers, and mounted officer in 18mm, from the lovely folks at Eureka Miniatures. These were a joy to paint, and have some lovely little details on them, despite their diminutive size. They’re pretty easy on the wallet too, at just pennies per figure. I also have a handful of other minis from this range, including some French, more Prussians (naturally), and a couple of bases worth of Russians for a fun ‘what-if’ project I’ve been pondering on.
Hochland handgunners, Warhammer Fantasy Citadel October 2025 A recent trip to my hometown of Nottingham had the liquor of nostalgia pumping through my veins, and so I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of bits for my ongoing (and much-beloved) Hochland project for Warhammer Fantasy. These handgunners aren’t from that particular shopping spree, instead serving as a small test batch for my colour scheme.
Shadows of the Under-Empire: The Deathmaster’s Reign Begins
The skittering echoes in the dark just became a death sentence. Warhammer Age of Sigmar is expanding its digital pantheon, and this time, the spotlight falls on the most feared silhouette in the Mortal Realms: the Skaven Deathmaster. As Clan Eshin prepares to unleash its master of clandestine murder on PC and consoles next year, the hype surrounding Age of Sigmar’s gaming ecosystem has reached a fever pitch. The Deathmaster isn’t just another unit; he is a manifestation of the “silent but deadly” philosophy that defines Skaven high-society—if you can call a subterranean sprawl of backstabbing vermin “society.” In the upcoming title, players can expect a gameplay loop defined by high-risk, high-reward assassination runs. Imagine weaving through frontline chaos, invisible to the naked eye, only to emerge behind an enemy Hero with daggers slicked in weeping blade poison. It is a visceral, predatory experience that demands precision and punishes hesitation. The “Rotten Usagi” lens demands more than just a stats breakdown; it’s about the atmosphere. The aesthetic of the Deathmaster is pure, gritty cinematic gold. We are looking at tattered black cowls, the eerie, radioactive hum of warpstone-encrusted blades, and a fluid, supernatural movement style that makes every kill feel like a choreographed dance of ruin. This isn’t clunky medieval combat; this is high-octane, internet-native lethality. The expansion of the Age of Sigmar IP into high-fidelity gaming indicates a shift toward more narrative-driven, atmospheric experiences. As we look toward next year, the inclusion of the Deathmaster suggests a focus on verticality and stealth mechanics that have often been sidelined in favor of massive troop movements. Whether you are a die-hard tabletop veteran or a newcomer drawn to the grimdark allure of the Skaven, the arrival of the Deathmaster represents a premium evolution of Warhammer gaming. Sharpen your blades and keep your eyes on the shadows—the Great Horned Rat demands blood, and the Deathmaster is here to collect.
The Mordheim Clock Tower! This is my entry for the Critter Challenge and Squidmar Open. Background is digitally painted in Krita and printed on cardboard. I used some of my unfinished Mordheim buildings as reference. The model is my own sculpt from last year. I was feeling great about this project until I tried to photograph it, but I’m really out of ideas trying to focus this thing from far away. I can get good focus if my camera is up close, but then the base looks really wide. Maybe my second-hand camera was damaged, or I need a different lens. I’m not really knowledgeable about cameras. People are going to point out that Mordheim should be dark or overcast, but I was juggling too many new things with this project and I’m only really comfortable painting sunlit scenes. I’ve seen some really cool entries so far. Good luck, everybody!

One of the best things you can do for enjoying wargaming at a local store is to keep a list of people that you don’t ever want to play again. Gotchas, obnoxious spam lists, angle shooting, anything that makes it seem like you wasted three hours? Add them to the tally and avoid leaving an opening on discord for them to propose a match. Every edition of Warhammer has been balanced for two players that care about the experience.
Throwback thursday, kinda! My 2025 and 2024 black orcs! I tried to make them fit together as best I could. Still haven’t fixed the axe blade as I’ve been away from home for the past week.

Quebec infantry, French & Indian War Crann Tara April 2025/January 2026 I spent a while in my youth living in the absolutely wondrous and lovely city of Toronto and, while the experience was a huge adventure and I made many friends, and have many fond memories, I never really explored Canada’s rich and storied history while I was there (I was a young buck of 23 who was more interested in visiting the filming locations from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World). That’s changed recently, however, and I’ve recently gained a bit of an obsession with the place, and Quebec in particular, though sadly I never visited, despite Montreal being on my list. Here we have one base of three Compagnies Franches de la Marine, flanked by three Coureurs de Bois, ready to take the fight to the British across the dense forests and vast mountains of New France. Miniatures are from the wonderful Crann Tara - a manufacturer who absolutely deserves more coverage, as their 18th century figures are beautiful, and incredibly good-quality for their reasonable price.
Another pair of goblins rebased! I repainted the faces to bring them up to date with my latest. The eyes were really hard for me on the right one, they’re really tiny! Also adjusted the robes to my latest scheme.
I’ve only ever “kitbashed” the standard GW and/or Frostgrave models so this was my first attempt at truly creating something from different pieces. On a recent day trip I visited a game store where I came upon a Nolzur’s Orthon mini. I fell in love with the torso and immediately thought it would make great kitbash fodder. Who doesn’t love a big bruiser boy? I hacked off the head with a mitre saw. My vision for this piece was that of a giant savage brute and I felt the crossbow didn’t really lend itself to that so I chopped that bad boy off too. I then gave him a stump made of green stuff and aquariam gravel. For the head I used an AOS horse head that I got online (check out NoesAttic on Etsy for bits). I like that it reads as either an ogre using a decapitated horse head as a mask OR some kind of giant mutated by black magic. The head made me feel like he should be a beast of burden and so I used a piece of metal terrain from Reaper and attached to him using a piece of craft/jewelry chain. I finished him off by attaching him to an AOS Stormcast Eternal base. The story I created in my mind is that of a savage giant that hauls around the last vestige of a holy building n his back, out of a sense of animalistic obedience. I tried not to be too much of chinscratcher and attempted to focus on just making decisionsc letting my hands do all the thinking. Overall, I think it has a cool silhouette and I’m eager to paint him up.
