this is gonna be a crazy super long post but here we goes :) so. I’ve been a longtime enjoyer of Magic The Gathering since my brothers taught me to play when I was like 12. however, what I enjoyed playing was buying one of them big fat pack boxes for us to split then just throwing together 60 card decks from whatever we had in our not huge collection when my brothers and I moved out of our parents house, we stopped seeing each other so often and so we stopped playing. a few times since, I’ve tried to play magic with Other People, but unfortunately the generally accepted ‘casual’ format thats the only thing that people who play mtg ever play is Commander, which I don’t enjoy because there are so many restrictions on building a deck and there’s a huge amount of prerequisite card knowledge to be able to make a reasonably decent deck (also they’re just expensive) and I would just ask people to play the standard 60 card format with me, as I had been, because there are some people that play that! but. the formats for that are 'standard’ (limited to the last three sets released), 'modern’ (last five sets), and 'legacy’ (every card released forever), so since the newest cards I own are from 2018, I would have to play legacy, and because that permits Every Card Ever, anyone who plays it will whip out like five fuckass cards from 1968 that just say 'once cost I win the game’ and thats just. not fun. the one way to play mtg that I’ve found that I do really enjoy, is Jumpstart. jumpstart cards come in prebuilt themed packs of 20 cards, and is played by just shuffling two packs together and playing with that as is. because the packs are prebuilt the power level of what everyone is playing is equal, and its just a fun little casual thing that requires no prerequisite knowledge. but nobody wants to play that because its designed to be simplified and nobody gets to use their own collections to play it. so anyway, all that is background context to that a few days ago I’ve had an epiphany (courtesy of my wife showing me Battlebox and DanDan); there’s a wide variety of ways to play Magic The Gathering, and the only ones that the parent company of the game intended people to play were standard and draft. yes, they now support other formats, especially commander as by throwing their support behind it the company has made that the normal way to play the game. but these formats had to come from somewhere, and they definitely didn’t come from the game’s producers. ultimately, they’re just shit that someone made up. so, as long as its something that other people are willing to play with me, I can just. make a format of mtg to play that doesn’t have the things I don’t like about it. I can just take a hammer and FIX the game! so I browsed some currently existing and somewhat popular formats that other people have made, and for my basis to work off of, I chose Tiny Leaders because it looked neat. because other people need to be willing to play it in order for a game to be playable, I’ve been having Open Discussion about anything rules related in discord with everyone I know that I may play with (though 90% of the participation in discussion has just been myself and my wife). there are still a few things that I really want more input from others on or that I want to try playing, but at the moment what we have is; Little Leaders (modified Tiny Leaders) current agreed upon format rules; - all cards must be converted mana cost 3 or less - 'Commanders’ in the form of Leaders; don’t have to be legendary, don’t deal commander damage. still have a +2 tax every time they return to the command zone. Leaders DO count for any ability or text which references 'Commanders’ - all cards must share colour identity with Leader - highlander (no duplicates) - deck size 40 cards, NOT including leader - starting life total 20 - works best with four players - start at 20 life and scale +5 per player after 2, so 30 life for 4 players proposed rules for discussion via Will Of The Council - ❌ creatures being required to share a typing with Leader - Non-Highlander / allowing duplicates; potentially only 2 per card, or not allowing duplicate legendary cards - limiting keywords to two per card, possibly requiring controlling player to choose which to keep if a third keyword would be applied - ❌ Signature Spells (instants and sorceries) in the same way as oathbreaker, possibly limit to cmc 1 to balance - ❌ every Leader can choose a background, matching their colour identity (❌❌❌maybe have backgrounds Always On from command zone Eminence-style) - Favourite Spells; Little Leaders get One Sorcery in their colour identity in the command zone with them as their Favourite Spell, which is exiled after cast (maybe return to command zone on your upkeep, and/or can only cast while your Leader is on the field) - Battle Of Commonfolk; no legendary cards allowed - Pauper Mode; only common cards allowed, uncommons for Leaders - Battlebox style Lands; 10 land cards in command zone, none in decks. lands cannot be returned to the command zone. reduced deck size to 30 - All Partners; you may select Partners for your Leader, but the Partners must match your Leader’s colour identity and the total combined cmc of your Leader and Partners may not exceed 3 or have any 0 or x costs Edit: Little Leaders Decks we’ve made; Little Leaders - Archidekt the suggested rulings with an ❌ beside them have either been discussed enough to be dismissed, or have been trialed in okay and deemed to not make the game more fun to play. so far I’ve found this format massively easier to build decks for, generally much less expensive to buy a deck for than Commander, and overall a more casual and fun experience. I very much want to further discuss or trial play with the Non-Highlander, Favourite Spells, Battle Of Commonfolk, and All Partners rules suggestions, and am very interested to see what anyone else might come up with that might make this a really unique and silly informal way to play magic. as can be seen from the signature spells, backgrounds, and favourite spells suggestions (those all came from me) I really like the idea of having A Little Thing that a Leader can Do, aside from their ability text, to make the game really feel like a battle between the Leaders (at this point maybe I just want to play hearthstone lmao) but having those, especially enchantments, is just. way too strong. it dramatically changes the balance of the game in a bad way. I’m really hopeful that the Favourite Spells, if I can get to try them, won’t be too bad with forcing them to only be sorceries and exile on resolve + only return to the command zone on that players upkeep preventing people from choosing overly mean gimmicky things anyway, thats a lotta words. would love to hear any input or thoughts anyone has on my little theorycrafting!
i think you're ummm.... stinky! and should have a bad day! bleaghh *pulls down one eyelid so you know i am being RudeTM* i hope you see a cute puppy and don't get to pet it! and it's sad! because it didn't get pet!! ૮TTᴥTTა (/joke) (is this helping with the lack of anon hate lol)
i saw a cute puppy a few weeks ago and you’ll be GLAD to know i got to pet it so stay mad
so due to my wifes’s influence ive been crazy mtg on the brain lately and in following with that last post of designing our own format (its in a place I’m very happy with now) and that guy on that other post while incapable of reading what I was actually writing did make one good point; I should get some draft and cubeing in my life, but not in the way they suggested because I don’t believe in gambling $30 on cardboard every week. instead, I’m going to continue my enjoyment of Jumpstart by building a Jumpstart Sideboard Cube. so how this is going to work is I’m going to assemble one of every Theme from all of the non-core(and not avatar) sets of Jumpstart (more on that later), then modify them ever so slightly so each pack has 22 cards in it instead of 20. then, to play, each player will grab two cube shells out of the cube (at random or not haven’t decided), look at their 44 cards, and cut four of them (placing in sideboard to be replaced into their packs later) to make their deck. now, each non-core jumpstart set has 10 Themes in it and the ones I’m intending to include to start are Dominaria (have), LotR (have half), March of the Machine, All Will Be One, and Brothers’ War. which is 5 sets, for 50 Themes. which means I need 50 Cube Shells, and 1,100 cards. that many cards is,,, expensive. to acquire. even when the majority of them are chaff nobody wants they’re still sold for 35-40¢. so for me to buy all of those would be downright financially unwise. so I’m going to order counterfeits. not the high end kind that you could bring to a tournament, no. I’m going to go and order these cards from a company that prints playing cards on demand and doesn’t print copyrighted material or any of the special shit like the shiny sticker on rare cards, and get them printed with a special card back unique to my JumpStart cube to make them easily identifiable. I don’t care if they’re real cards and I’m never intending to trade them so I want to make them unique to the thing I’m making, and in a way do as some have insulted jumpstart for in boardgame-ify-ing it. I do believe that MTG is a bit too expansive and complicated to qualify for board game status no matter what you do with it, but my goal is to have a thing I can whip out as a party game or as something to play quick while waiting for something thats balanced and easy to just play without having to prep much or think too hard about it. oh and because ive freed myself from the shackles of buying packs for more jumpstart sets and have decided to meddle with their contents already, when I was unable to sleep last night due to fire alarm testing I built 5 themed packs for the Warhammer 40k UB set. so I do also wanna include those :) alsoalso while I’m here; here, have an image of why the beginnings of my JumpStart cube are currently being stored only fitting the cube goes in a cube right? ;p sadly this thing is very flimsy and doesn’t have the volume to hold what I want, but it may be a good inspiration for me to build something sturdier that can hold the needed volume
