This is my semi-annual bit about how maybe you have a parent you cannot, for your own health, be in regular contact with, but you still wish them well in a “may God keep you (far away from me)” way. It’s not that you owe them anything. But maybe some part of you wishes things could be different and wants a productive thing to do around their birthday, or around Father’s Day / Mother’s Day. I have found some real peace in finding an organization we can both agree on and chipping in toward its work. With my father, that’s been Save the Boundary Waters. It’s been UNRWA. It’s been The Innocence Project. This year it’s UNHCR – World Refugee Day is the day before Father’s Day is celebrated in the U.S., and UNHCR will send a virtual card to the honoree of your choice if you donate to them for the occasion. (Helpful if you don’t want to remind your honoree of your email address.) Anyway: your mileage may vary. But whatever (many) disagreements my father and I have, we agree that people displaced by violence deserve our assistance.
