Living MaaS Amidst a near constant state of supply chain attacks, data hacks and exploited vulnerabilities, seeing something a little more ‘traditional’ this morning on my news feed has caught my attention: malware-as-a-service. Threat actors create a system of infection to payload to payoff and sell it for a subscription fee. Sekoia.io’s Threat Detection and Research team has been following one such since at least April, initially sharing this article with their customers before publishing it on their regular blog yesterday. Using the ClickFix social engineering technique, ErrTraffic leverages compromised WordPress sites as bait, resolving into two distinct clusters for payload distribution. At its core, it’s a JavaScript framework injected into these compromised sites, using a Traffic Distribution System (TDS) function to spread via impersonated platforms and AI tools. In action, it displays faked Captcha pages or even blue screens, with instructions to ‘fix’ the problem through a series of copy and pasted commands. The malcious code is hosted with EtherHiding, a technique that uses the blockchain to obfuscate the command-and-control server that is remotely deploying the malware through a dead drop resolver. It’s similar to a fake update phishing attempt. The two clusters have been documented by Sekoia after some forensic analysis. The Analytics cluster, which had previously been documented by LevelBlue and other threat reports, relies on the Polygon blockchain and the cryptocurrency wallet address 0x08207B087F61d7e95E441E15fd6d40BEfd6eD308 to retrieve the C2 domains and fetch Vidar infostealer payloads during April and May 2026. It uses the /cf[.]js endpoint to fetch the script embedding the ClickFix lure from its C2 infrastructure. The second cluster, dubbed Beer, interacts with the Polygon blockchain by querying various public RPC endpoints, mainly Quicknode. Several wallet addresses are used to retrieve C2 domains predominantly characterized by the[.]beer TLD. This cluster distributes several malware families, including infostealers such as Vidar, Stealc, Remus and Salat. This cluster uses the /api/css[.]js endpoint to fetch the script embedding the ClickFix lure from its C2 infrastructure. Both install backdoor access to the infected WordPress sites, setting up a persistence module. In their research, the team discovered that some of the infected site carry both clusters suggesting some operational overlap or competition between operators, as ErrTraffic is being sold as a subscription. The scale of the MaaS framework has grown, indicating that this campaign is proving lucrative to the threat actor behind it, a user with the handle ‘LenAI’, who has been advertising ErrTraffic on the Exploit[.]IN cybercrime forum and Telegram. Sekoia documented several campaigns using ErrTraffic in the last few months, which they break down in their article from infection to persistence. These include ‘bintang’, associated with one smart contract of the Beer cluster, and an impersonated AI platform campaign, supposedly using malvertising to spread an attacker-controlled site impersonating Google Antigravity and delivering Danabot. The Analytics campaign spreads Vidar through a unique smart contract. Malware infections like ErrTraffic can be hard to mitigate, since much of their code is obfuscated and backdoors often leverage legitimate processes to hide in. Prevention is, as always, the key.
