Okay so I just watched Obsession, spoilers btdubs, and the plot of that movie reminded me so much of Frankenstein. The idea of a self centered man creating a being for a single purpose and then being absolutely disgusted when that being fulfills said purpose is so. So interesting. That’s just like a surface level interpretation of both stories, obviously the monster is much more of a character, and Freaky Niki (as it were) is a character I don’t believe we’re supposed to sympathize with as much. We’re supposed to care more about Niki, the normal person who Bear trapped in her own body. But I do feel like there is something to say for both characters being used and abused by Bear. Obviously real Niki to a greater extent, but what Bear did was basically imbue his emotions into creating his dream person, and only after giving her that one purpose does he feel an ounce of disgust. And instead of killing his loved ones out of vengeance like The Monster, Freaky Niki does so either out of carelessness or out of a feeling of obligation. This is what she’s meant to do, it’s her role. She was created with this one purpose. Good movie
pisses me off so bad when i see a post about obsession thats like “obsession but (insert x ship here)” stop it . no. bad. spraYs you with wtaer. thats not what the film is about. imagine watching the Horror Movie wjere The Horrible Things happen and Its Despicable then going “yeah let me put these characters i ship in place of nikki and bear.” i think its totally fine if you want to make obsession-based aus for other media you like but dont fuckin do it with the characters who you WANT to get together?? The whole point of the film is that NIKKI DOESN’T WANT HIM.
Bear’s wish was inherently evil, so it went wrong, because forcing someone to “love” you is immoral. Granted, he didn’t know it would work and drastically change Nikki, but he only wanted to change it once it wasn’t going how he desired. Bear stripped Nikki of her free will and autonomy and made her obsessed with him, then became angry and frustrated when she didn’t behave as he wanted. However, he still refused to let Nikki go; he listened to her beg for death but acted like he was the victim and blamed her for being unhappy “dating” him. Even in the end, Bear was too cowardly to kill himself, and if Nikki’s wish hadn’t disrupted him, he most likely would’ve continued trying to “make it work” because he was too obsessed with her to truly let her go. Bear was a selfish, rotten person whose wish ruined the lives of three people because he was obsessed with living out his fantasy.
After about a month of putting it off, I finally got around to watching Obsession. I am going to spoil a lot, and I do really encourage people to watch it, it’s fucking amazing. I’ve been a fan of That’s a Bad Idea, and Curry Barker by extension, for a few years now, and while I would have guessed they could make something good, I wouldn’t have guessed that it would be as good as it was. Because wow, this film is good. I have a lot of thoughts, and took some notes throughout, but also I literally just finished it, so I’ll probably have more tomorrow. To start, it was significantly more frightening that I had assumed it would be. On two occasions I became deeply aware of, and made very uncomfortable by, the amount of space behind me. The erasure of Nikki’s face throughout the film was simply brilliant. Both in the physical assaults made on her face, and the use of light and shadow, as her metaphorical personhood is lost, her literal person is as well. The fact that the One Wish Willow wasn’t inherently fucked up, but instead it was specifically Bear’s wishing being, to use Barker’s own words from an interview with Collider ‘cursed’, is so delicious. It also adds an extra level of irony to Ian’s death, who probably would have been totally fine with his billion otherwise. It’s such a small change to the 'be careful what you wish for’ thing that massively improves it. As the classic proverb goes, it’s not a wish gone wrong if you wish for 20 dollars and the 20 dollars is made of bees, that’s just the djinn being a cunt. Having the wish be a neutral entity adds more to the film’s best aspect, its protagonist, Bear. Holy shit, Bear. It has been a long time since I have seen a character I wanted to kill himself more. Honestly, I think him killing himself was the only thing he did right in that entire movie, and he wouldn’t even have gone through with it if not for Nikki’s wish. Such a well written character, so scummy, so awful, just the worst guy, while also being so real. I think in our lives we’ve all known a Bear, and at times been a Bear. Who among us hasn’t wished that someone they’d be pinning over like them back. The issue comes more from his reaction to the wish working, which is, in a word, fucked. I don’t blame him for making a stupid wish while tipsy and heartbroken. I blame him for literally everything afterwards. Beyond that, the basics of film-making were extremely strong. it was shot wonderfully, though you can very much feel the old Bad Idea filming style of the back and forth talking heads in some scenes, and for me at least that did draw me out a little. I can’t super speak to the audio and colour things, one of my ears decided to kill itself before i started, and I forget to wear my glasses. Every performance was stellar, but Inde Navarrette clearly stole the show. So perfectly off putting and able to contort her face in being far scarier than any kind of horror monster showing 100000 teeth could be. The movie isn’t perfect, no movie is, and if you can’t find things you dislike in a piece of art, you’re not engaging with it fully. The ending feels… rushed. There are a lot of things that are kind of sped over, and I don’t think either Ian or Sarah’s deaths are quite given time to breathe. Sarah’s death is good, but Ian dies seemingly out of nowhere, and while I suppose it could sign that Nikki has completely lost it over the deep end, I think bashing Sarah’s face in maybe already did that. Maybe it’s just my fondness for Cooper Tomlinson, coming out, but still. To finish out this compliment-cat sandwich, I want to shout out Curry’s own brief roll in as the One Wish Willow support line guy, where he is basically just doing a Bad Idea skit. If you replace Michael Johnston with Cooper and add a single punchline to the end, it would be nearly unrecognizable as something else, and that’s kind of magical to me. If you did read this far, thank you! I have thoughts on the themes and such, but this post is already stupidly long, so I’ll probably make another post tomorrow when i have a to chance to think things over.
Obsession is TERRIFYING I just saw obsession and that shit was SO SCARY!!! Fantastic and terrifying movie, I jumped so many times and was so invested and impressed but HOLY SHIT the later part of the movie was so insanely bloody I KNEW it was coming and literally could not look at the screen at several points except to watch through my fingers. 10/10 horror movie, would recommend if you have a better horror tolerance than me, would never watch again!! However it did fill me with artistic inspiration and I might post fan art LOL
Alright guys I just watched the movie today and I come to you with an epiphany that hit me over lunch with my bestie. So we all know how at the beginning of the movie “bear” is shown as a nice guy. An object to sympathy. His nickname being “bear” which reminded me of the “stuck with a man or a bear in the woods” question. He represented the safe option. A depressed person who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Until! Later in the movie we realize hell no! That dude is so selfish, so unhealthy, extremely a huge ass coward. He hurt everybody that has been nice to him. His actions hurt Nikki, kill Sarah, kill Ian. He is after all the “man” within the “bear or man” question. The name “bear” along with his “nice guy, reserved, nervous good boy” attitude was all a façade. Once he had enough power and resources to only get what he wants. He fucking did and he didn’t give shit what were the consequences on everyone else. I wholeheartedly believe his attempt to die was NOT to free Nikki but to free himself of the responsibility and guilt of what his actions led to. In conclusion, “bear” is a terrible terrible man. One of the worst if not actually the worse.
