November 1st 1894: Nicholas II becomes Tsar On this day in 1894, Nicholas Romanov became the new Tsar of Russia. Aged 26, Nicholas succeeded to the throne after the death of his father Tsar Alexander III. Nicholas was largely unprepared and inexperienced to lead his country, and his rule saw Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and beginning of Russia’s disastrous involvement in World War One. He was known for violent suppression of protests, such as the peaceful 1905 Revolution which was fired upon by imperial troops. He ruled Russia until his abdication on March 2nd 1917, following the Bolshevik Revolution which removed him from power. The Tsar and his family were then imprisoned, and eventually executed by a Bolshevik firing squad in 1918.

A stylus was a metal pen used for scratching words into wax on wooden tablets. October 27, 1858: President Theodore Roosevelt Is Born On this day in 1858, Teddy Roosevelt was born in New York City. Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were the most prominent members of one of the most important families in American history. Theodore and Franklin occupied the White House for nineteen of the first forty-five years of the twentieth century, years during which much of the modern world – and the modern state – was created. They shared an unfeigned love for people and politics and a willingness to defy class prejudices to help create a true democracy of equal opportunity. Along with Eleanor, Theodore’s best-loved niece and Franklin’s wife, all three overcame personal obstacles as they independently – and collectively – transformed the model of a nation’s responsibility to its citizens and the wider world. Take a look at a timeline of key events during Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt’s lifetimes using photos, quotes, and clips from Ken Burns’s The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. Pazuzu Amulet, Assyrian, 799–600 BC (Pazuzu was the inspiration for the demon who possesses Regan in 1973 film The Exorcist.) The deity Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the 1st millennium BC. He normally has a dog-like face like here, and where his body is depicted he has a scaly torso, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings. He is often regarded as an evil underworld demon, but he seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mother’s womb or when newly born. Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. Amulets of Pazuzu like this were therefore placed in dwellings and attached to bedroom furniture. Smaller versions were hung around the necks of pregnant women.
In 2008, pieces of a 1500 year old stringed instrument made from wood and carved goat horn were found in a cave in the Altai mountains in Mongolia by someone chasing a lost sheep. After several years of study and experimentation, Mongolian ethnomusicologist Ganpurev Dagvan has recreated the instrument. He is currently on a world tour with a folk music band to introduce the goat-horn harp to the world.
I love when people try to excuse founding fathers for owning slaves and trying to say they were really against slavery and weren’t all that bad when one of their contemporaries and “ forgotten” founding father Robert Carter III manumitted all his slaves, gave them the land he felt he owed them as well as training and apprenticeships, and was promptly ostracized from Virginia and political society by the likes of Jefferson for making them look like assholes. Jefferson and Washington and all of them could have freed their slaves. They could have abolished slavery. They didn’t. Stop excusing them and the atrocities they committed.
